In a previous article, which you can read here, I was telling you what a great idea Venice might be for a city break. The city is well known for its romantic vibes, it became one of the most beautiful romantic escapes. Nevertheless, Venice is a great place to visit with your friends and family as well. 

 

Unique and enchanting, Venice was included in the UNESCO Heritage in 1987. The city is visited by over 1milion tourists every year, which, along with the climate changes and the extreme weather in the last years, raise serious concerns to the United Nations Organisation. For this reason, Venice might be included in the endangered cities lists in the coming years. But let’s hope things will turn in the right direction eventually. 

The best time to visit Venice is during the spring or autumn. The summer season is packed with tourists and it’s also very hot during those days.

1.Piazza San Marco

Basilica San Marco is the most famous building in Venice, and it’s no surprise since it’s located in the popular Piazza San Marco. This architectural masterpiece has stood the test of time since 1092 and is a true work of art.

3.Grand Canal

Venice’s unique character is defined by its nearly 200 canals and numerous bridges that connect the various islands making up this northern Italian city. The Grand Canal, stretching approximately 3.8km, is the largest of them all. For an authentic experience, taking a walk along its banks is definitely a must-do.

Positioned in Piazza San Marco, the Doge’s Palace is also among the most popular tourist attractions in Venice. Its unique architecture makes it impossible to miss, and visitors are welcome to explore both the exterior and interior for a fee of €30.

5.Ponte di Rialto

The Rialto Bridge is an iconic landmark that is a must-see for tourists. It offers a stunning view above the Grand Canal, which it perfectly frames with its symmetrical design. Originally built out of wood, the bridge was completely reconstructed from stone after it collapsed in the 1500s.

6.Ponte dei Sospiri 

The Bridge of Sighs, or Ponte dei Sospiri in Italian, is one of the most photographed places in Venice, along with the Rialto Bridge. In the past, this bridge connected the chambers of the Doge’s Palace used by the Venetian inquisition to the “New Prison”, a type of modern-day jail. Therefore, all the people who were sentenced to detention had to cross this bridge, where, according to legends, they stopped for a moment and sighed at the thought of losing their freedom.

7. Galeria dell’Accademia

For all those passionate about Renaissance art, the Accademia Art Gallery in Venice is a museum that delights visitors with numerous masterpieces for an entrance fee of 15€. And for those under 18 years old, entry is free of charge.

8. Venice Lido

Lido is the perfect place for those who want to escape the crowds of tourists and enjoy some moments of peace by the sea. You can get here by taking the ACTV vaporetto, which is the public water transport in Venice. Here you can find updated prices for all types of ACTV tickets and travels.

On the other hand, Burano is known for its brightly colored buildings and picturesque views. It is considered to be the most cheerful island in Venice.
