Essaouira is one of the most popular day trips from Marrakesh – the perfect option when you want to escape the city’s hustle and enjoy the fresh ocean breeze. Located on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, this charming port city, often called “The Pearl of the Atlantic,” is known for its laid-back atmosphere, bohemian soul, and vibrant medina.

How to Get from Marrakesh to Essaouira
The trip from Marrakesh to Essaouira takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and can be done in several ways:
- By bus (CTM or Supratours): This is a comfortable and affordable option, with tickets costing around 80–100 MAD one way. Buses leave from central Marrakesh stations and drop you off close to the medina in Essaouira.
- Organized day tours: Many agencies offer full-day tours with transport and guide included. It’s a convenient, stress-free option, especially if you’re short on time.
- Car rental: If you prefer more flexibility, renting a car is a good choice. The route takes you through scenic landscapes and argan tree groves.
We personally chose to go with an organized tour we booked through GetYourGuide, and it turned out to be a great decision. We were picked up near our hotel and dropped off wherever we wanted when we returned. On the way to Essaouira, we stopped at an argan oil cooperative, where we learned about the production process and enjoyed a small tasting – a lovely bonus to the journey.
Top Things To Do in Essaouira
Though small, Essaouira has plenty to offer – even in just one day. Its real charm doesn’t lie in ticking off landmarks, but in simply wandering its colorful streets and soaking in the artistic, almost cinematic vibe.
- Essaouira Medina: A UNESCO World Heritage site, the medina is a maze of narrow alleys filled with artisan workshops, small galleries, cozy cafés, and local boutiques. It’s the perfect place to get lost for an hour or two.
- Skala de la Ville: A historic sea bastion with old Portuguese cannons and sweeping views over the Atlantic and the fishing port. This is also where several Game of Thrones scenes were filmed – one of the town’s main tourist draws.
- The Port: Full of life, color, and character – and yes, a lot of fish! It feels more like an open-air seafood market than a traditional port. With its iconic blue fishing boats and constant activity, it’s one of the most photographed spots in town.
- Essaouira Beach: Not particularly spectacular, but many visitors enjoy relaxing here during their stay. The strong winds make it popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers.
- Place Moulay Hassan: The city’s main square, located right by the port – a great spot for people-watching, grabbing a drink, or just soaking in the local energy.

What to Eat in Essaouira
One of the most popular local experiences is buying fresh sardines right at the port and taking them to one of the nearby simple restaurants, where they’ll grill them for you on the spot. The fish is usually served with fresh salad or fries. Don’t forget to negotiate the price when buying your fish – that tip came from our lovely host back in Marrakesh and saved us a few dirhams!
For a more refined culinary experience in a magical setting, we highly recommend Dar Baba Restaurant & More – an elegant spot with excellent food and a relaxed, cozy atmosphere.
If you’re visiting Marrakesh, a day trip to Essaouira is truly worth it – it offers a peaceful contrast to the intensity of the Red City and leaves you with unforgettable memories of Morocco’s Atlantic charm.
