The Maldives is a dream destination for many, with over 1,000 islands—most of them uninhabited—forming this exotic paradise. As an archipelago, the primary mode of transportation in the Maldives is by water, which may not appeal to everyone who dislikes boat travel. Still, I assure you, the beauty of this place makes any compromise worthwhile.

Here’s a quick guide on how to travel from the Maldives’ main airport to local islands or resort destinations.

How to Travel from Malé Airport to Islands in the Maldives

In the Maldives, travel between islands is generally limited to boats and seaplanes, with occasional domestic flights. Your mode of transport will depend on where you’re staying. Here’s what you need to know:

1. If You’re Staying at a Resort:

Most resorts are located far from Malé, making seaplanes the primary option for transport. Only a few resorts are close enough to reach by boat. Round-trip seaplane transfers start at around €300-400 and are typically arranged directly through your resort.

2. If You’re Staying on a Local Island:

For local islands, you can transfer from the airport using either a local ferry or a speedboat.

  • Local Ferry: Although very affordable (just a few dollars per trip), this option can be inconvenient as ferries operate on limited schedules and can take a long time. Note that Malé’s airport is located on Hulhumalé Island, connected to Malé by a ferry ride. So, if you choose the local ferry, you’ll need to first take a ferry to Malé before transferring to another ferry to your island destination.
  • Speedboat: The most convenient and time-efficient option for reaching local islands. Fares start at around €25 and vary depending on the distance. To arrange a speedboat transfer, it’s best to contact your accommodation provider, who can help you book the trip.

  • Local Ferry: The most affordable way to travel between local islands, costing around $1-4. Just be sure to check the ferry schedule in advance, as ferries run only on certain days and times.
  • Speedboat: The fastest way to travel between islands, but also the most expensive, with prices starting at $25 and increasing based on distance. You can book speedboats through your hotel or online via services like iCom Tours Maldives.
  • Seaplane: Seaplane transfers are generally used to travel from the airport to remote resort islands. These flights are booked directly through the resort.
