Mykonos is a famous island in Greece where tourists go for entertainment rather than the classical relaxation of a summer vacation. The island boasts typical Cycladic architecture, with white houses and blue roofs, narrow streets, extravagant accommodations, and luxury clubs and restaurants. Tourists from all over the world come to Mykonos for its beaches, enchanting landscapes, and nightlife. However, due to its fame, the island attracts a large number of tourists every year during the summer season, resulting in high prices. Mykonos competes with Santorini for the title of the most expensive island in Greece. If you are looking for other destinations with the same reputation but can be packaged on a budget, Mykonos is not the best option. However, if you have already booked cheap plane tickets, don’t be discouraged by the accommodation prices and focus on finding the most suitable option. You can even consider staying on a nearby island and reaching Mykonos by ferry.
1. How to Get to Mykonos from the Airport
Getting to Mykonos from the airport is relatively easy since the airport is only 4 km away from the city center. Most hotels can arrange transportation from the airport to the hotel upon request, or you can take a bus from the airport to Chora and get off at the Fabrika station, where you can purchase tickets directly from the driver. However, private transportation or taking a taxi is recommended as most accommodations are several kilometers away from the center.

Mykonos has approximately 85 square kilometers, meaning that in a few days, you can explore the entire island from one end to the other. The most common means of transportation in Mykonos are ATVs and cars, which you can rent from various locations on the island, online, or through the hotel where you are staying.
So, in Mykonos, you can get around with:
1. ATV / car / scooter – we rented an ATV for the entire duration of the vacation, and it was a very good decision, especially regarding parking. Most tourists choose to rent a car or ATV because it can be quite challenging to reach certain beaches or accommodations by bus if you are not staying in Mykonos Town.
2. Bus – there are buses that run from the Fabrika station and the Old Port station to various locations on the island. From the Fabrika station, you can reach the following destinations: Airport, New Port, Platis Yalos, Psarou, Ornos, Ai Yannis, Paradise, Paranga. From the Old Port station, you can reach Ano Mera, Kalafatis, Elia, Neo Limani, Aghios Stefanos. A bus ride in Mykonos costs approximately 2€.
3. Taxi – you can use Uber (although finding available drivers can be challenging) or the IMOVE app.
4. Water taxi – to travel from the new port to the old port, and vice versa, you can take a water taxi; the cost is 2€/one way.

Mykonos is a popular tourist destination with a Mediterranean climate that ensures generally pleasant weather throughout the year. However, during the summer months, the wind can be a significant aspect of the weather that visitors must take into account. The wind in Mykonos can be quite strong at certain times of the day and can make it feel cooler in the evenings and mornings.
Although the warmth of the sun is still felt, the wind can make it difficult to enjoy the pool at your accommodation as the water can be consistently cold. It’s worth noting that if you’re planning a vacation in Mykonos during the summer, it’s essential to pack accordingly. Light clothing is ideal during the day, as temperatures can reach between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius, which is quite warm for that time of year. However, it can feel cooler in the evenings and mornings, so bringing a light jacket or sweater is recommended.
Despite the wind, visitors can still enjoy everything that Mykonos has to offer during the summer months. It’s a beautiful island with many beaches, excellent restaurants, and an active nightlife. Just make sure to plan your activities around the wind, and you’ll have a fantastic time.

Mykonos Island, situated in the Aegean Sea, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece. It is known for its picturesque beaches, stunning white-washed architecture, and vibrant nightlife. However, if you plan to visit Mykonos during the peak season, which is in the summer months, you should be prepared to pay more for accommodation. Therefore, it’s wise to book your stay well in advance to avoid the high prices. Most of the accommodations in Mykonos are private villas and guesthouses, but luxury hotels or hostels are also available. If you’re looking for budget-friendly options, you should consider visiting during the off-season, which is from May to early October.
Where to stay in Mykonos
The area you choose to stay in depends on what you want to experience during your vacation. If you want to be in the center of the action and not be dependent on transportation, then you should look towards Mykonos Town (Chora). However, keep in mind that this comes with a lot of crowding and noise at night. On the other hand, if you plan to spend most of your time at the beach, then it’s recommended to choose accommodation near a beach to avoid losing much time on the roads. If you’re looking for a quieter area, you can consider staying in the southwest part of the island, where there are many villas and guesthouses. However, without a means of transport, it’s not recommended to stay in areas where public transport doesn’t reach.
Cost of accommodation in Mykonos
As mentioned earlier, accommodation prices in Mykonos are quite high, especially during the summer months. Therefore, if you’re on a budget, it’s advisable to avoid visiting during June, July, and August. Instead, consider visiting during the less popular period among tourists, which is from May to early October. In September, in the middle of the month, we paid approximately €1550 for six nights for a group of six people. To give you an idea of the price difference depending on the period, the same villa, for the same number of nights and people, would have cost us €3370 in July or August.

If you’re not interested in parties, nightlife, and spending extensive time at the beach, you can visit the major tourist attractions in Mykonos in just three days because the island is small and can be explored quite easily. However, if you want to make the most of the location and everything it has to offer, including the excitement of nightlife, it’s recommended to allocate at least five days to your vacation in Mykonos.

Nikos Taverna is a great option for those seeking traditional Greek dishes, while Taverna Kostantis is known for its seafood specialties. Souvlaki Story and Jimmy’s Gyros are both excellent choices for a quick and tasty meal, and To Maereio offers a range of Mediterranean dishes at affordable prices.
