Milan is an ideal city break destination for a weekend getaway. It boasts excellent connectivity with almost every city in Europe and offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit all budgets. I first visited Milan in March 2017, but unfortunately, the weather was not in our favor, and it ruined our plans. As it was my first overseas trip, I wasn’t very impressed with the city at that time. However, four years later, I decided to give it a second chance. To ensure that weather would not be a problem this time, I visited Milan in July, and it turned out to be the perfect time to visit.Milan is the best weekend city break idea. It’s well connected with almost every city in Europe, and it has plenty of hotels and hostels for all budgets. In March 2017 I visited Milan for the first time. Sadly, the weather was not our friend then and it kind of ruined our plans. Maybe that’s the reason I wasn’t very impressed with the city at that time, especially that it was the very first trip abroad. 4 years later, I decided to give it a second chance. To make sure this time the weather will not be a problem, I visited Milan in July, and it was the perfect time.

Public Transport in Milan

We bought our tickets with 2 months in advance, directly on Wizz Air app, and paid around 50€ for two persons. We landed on Bergamo Airport, from where you can get to Milano Centrale either by bus or train. For a one way bus ticket, you’ll pay between 8 and 10€, depending on the bus company, while for a one way train trip you’ll pay 4.80€.

To get around the city in Milan, the best way will be to take the metro, which is well connected and it’s also the most affordable option.Β

Accommodation in Milan

We spent the first night in Milan, and the second one in Bergamo. As we mainly wanted to visit Lake Como, for the first night we chose a hotel close to the Statione Centrale, to save time. The 2 nights cost usΒ 110€, and we found the hotels onΒ Booking.comΒ – my go to agregator when it comes to accommodation.Β

Day 1 – Lake ComoΒ

Our main purpose of the trip was to visit Varenna, Como and Bellagio, three beautiful towns on the shore of Lake Como. On the first day, we visited these towns, but our itinerary to Como was not the best one. We were too lazy to plan it properly, which resulted in an unwanted 2-hour ferry ride.

If you’re planning to visit all three towns in a day trip, it’s best to start with Como, which is the closest to Milan. It only takes 40 minutes to get there by train, and a one-way ticket costs 6€. Bellagio comes next, and then Varenna, which is the farthest one. The towns are pretty close to each other, and you can travel between them by either ferry or bus. From Varenna, you can take a train back to Milan.Varenna, Como and Bellagio were the whole purpose of the trip, so we spent the first day to visit these wonderful towns on the shore of Lake Como. I am not going to share with you our itinerary to Como, cuz it wasn’t the best one. We were, in fact, too lazy to organise it as we should have and the result was an unwanted 2hrs ferry ride.

Como is the closest one to Milan, then comes Bellagio, and then Varenna, which is the furthest one. If you’re planning to visit them all in a day trip, then it would be the best to start with Como. From Milan, you’ll get there in 40 min by train. A one way ticket costs 6€. Between the towns, you can travel either by ferry or by bus, as they are pretty close to each other. From Varenna, you can get back to Milan by train.

Our first day of the city break in Milan concluded with a breathtaking sunset that illuminated the sky in the heart of the city, right in front of the magnificent Duomo di Milano. As fashion enthusiasts, we couldn’t resist the temptation to explore the Vittorio Emanuele Galleries, a paradise for every fashion lover. However, what truly captivated me was the unparalleled beauty of the sunset, which made me appreciate the city’s charm even more.

Day 2 – Bergamo

On the second day, we visited Bergamo, but I was not impressed with the city. Opinions about Bergamo vary greatly, with some people claiming it is even more beautiful than Milan, while others question what there is to like about it at all. Personally, I did not enjoy the city and I do not find it to be prettier than Milan. Perhaps we missed some of the top-rated attractions, or maybe the city was too quiet for my taste. Our main reason for booking our second night there was its proximity to the airport, which is only a 10-15 minute drive away from the city.

I’m gonna leave some pics from Lake Como below, in case you’re still wondering if you should visit it or not πŸ™‚ :Β
