As usual, I found myself lost in thoughts of going on a trip that’s not too far from home and doesn’t cost too much. And nothing fits this plan better than Milan. Why? Because it’s an affordable destination that you can easily travel to from Romania for a quick city-break. It’s also a great connection point to other iconic Italian destinations. This way, I can take advantage of both cheap plane tickets that are available throughout the year, and the fact that I can visit various wonderful places that are located close to Milan.

This time around, I’ve decided to write down the whole research that I usually do in these types of scenarios and share with you the top 5 rated day trips from Milan.

1. Lake Como

Lake Como is one of the most popular destinations near Milan, and it is considered one of the most amazing places in Italy to visit. The breathtaking views of Lake Como are sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who visits. It is located between Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, and it is one of my favorite destinations in Europe. Como, Bellagio, and Varenna are three small towns situated on theComo, and they attract thousands of tourists from all over the world every year. How to get from Milan to Como?

The easiest way to get to Como from Milano Centrale Train Station is by taking the train. The journey takes about 40 minutes and a one-way ticket costs 6€.

2. Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is undeniably one of Italy’s most iconic destinations, easily recognizable in every picture you see. It is a must-visit for anyone who loves “dolce far niente”. This beautiful place on Earth comprises of five small towns: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. These towns are situated close to each other, and together they form one of Italy’s most famous tourist attractions.

How do you get to Cinque Terre from Milan?

To travel from Milan to Cinque Terre, you need to take a train from Milano Centrale Station to Monterosso or La Spezia. Monterosso is the first town on the line, and a one-way ticket costs as low as 10€. The same price applies to La Spezia, which is a bit larger than the other five towns but is located very close to them. If you get off at La Spezia, you can easily reach Cinque Terre via the Cinque Terre train, which stops at each of the five towns.

Venice is a popular romantic destination, suitable for couples and more. The distance between Milan and Venice is approximately 270km, and it takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to travel there by train.

How do you get from Milan to Venice?

The most convenient way to travel is by train. A one-way ticket from Milan to Venice costs about 20€.

4. Verona and Lake Garda 

Lake Garda is one of Italy’s most picturesque destinations, alongside fellow glacier lakes Como and Maggiore. Additionally, Verona is a must-visit for its rich culture and history.Shakespearean romanticism.

How do you get from Milan to Verona?

To travel from Milan to Verona, take the train. It takes 1h20m and a one-way ticket costs €25.

How do you get from Verona to Lake Garda?

You need to take the train from Verona Porta Nuova to Peschiera del Garda. A one-way ticket costs 4€ and the journey takes 15 minutes.

5. Portofino

As the famous song goes, “I found my love in Portofino”. Portofino is a destination that embodies the “dolce far niente” lifestyle, and is likely to captivate you with its stunning surroundings. When I think of this place, I imagine vintagend dresses with polka dot patterns that perfectly complement the Italian scenery. Portofino is a must-visit destination that will leave you spellbound.

It takes around 3h30m to travel by train from Milan to Portofino, with one-way ticket prices starting at 16€.
