I have to admit that Benagil Cave was one of my biggest curiosities in Algarve and I was very excited to see it. Benagil Cave is a very famous attraction in Algarve, which attracts thousands of international tourists. They are all eager to see this unique Earth’s wonder with their own eyes, just like I was. The name of the cave comes from the name of the village where it’s located. Benagil is a very small fishing village on the southern coast of Algarve, well known for its famous sea cave. But there’s much more about Benagil than just a cave. Along the coast, there are many other spectacular caves and rock formations, which are known to be unique in the world. There are also two famous beaches very close to Benagil:Β Praia do Carvoeiro and Praia de Corredoura. However, it is Benagil Cave that increased the village’s popularity. Just a simple Google search will reveal thousands and thousands of pictures featuring the Benagil Cave, which has long been present in every “top destinations” or “must see places in the world” travel guides. There’s no wonder so many tourists are curious to see if what’s revealed in the pictures is the reality indeed.Β

How do you get to the Benagil Cave?
You can reach Benagil Cave by organised boat tours or even on your own, by stand-up paddles or kayaks. For the boat tours, the starting points are in Lagos, Portimao or Albufeira as well as local Benagil beaches . Lagos is a bit far from Benagil, which means the boat trip will take longer. Our accommodation was in Lagos, but we decided to start the tour from Portimao, so we took the train there. There is a short ride from Lagos to Portimao, and this way you get to see one of the largest towns on the coast as well.Β
I recommend you to take the boat tour, as you’ll also see many other wonderful caves during the trip. Be advised that the organised tours are extremely popular during summer and even in early September, so you might want to book the trip in advance. The only boats downside is that you can get inside the cave only if you go there by SUPs or kayaks. Β
