Benagil Cave Travel Guide – All you need to know

Home Β» Destinations Β» Portugal Β» Algarve Β» Benagil Cave Travel Guide – All you need to know

I have to admit that Benagil Cave was one of my biggest curiosities in Algarve and I was very excited to see it. Benagil Cave is a very famous attraction in Algarve, which attracts thousands of international tourists. They are all eager to see this unique Earth’s wonder with their own eyes, just like I was. The name of the cave comes from the name of the village where it’s located. Benagil is a very small fishing village on the southern coast of Algarve, well known for its famous sea cave. But there’s much more about Benagil than just a cave. Along the coast, there are many other spectacular caves and rock formations, which are known to be unique in the world. There are also two famous beaches very close to Benagil:Β Praia do Carvoeiro and Praia de Corredoura. However, it is Benagil Cave that increased the village’s popularity. Just a simple Google search will reveal thousands and thousands of pictures featuring the Benagil Cave, which has long been present in every “top destinations” or “must see places in the world” travel guides. There’s no wonder so many tourists are curious to see if what’s revealed in the pictures is the reality indeed.Β

Is the Benagil Cave really worth it?

In a way, I’d say it’s a bit overrated and it kind of lost its natural purpose, due to the mass marketing. But, on the other hand, I still believe it’s a nature’s wonder that’s totally worth seeing, at least once in a lifetime. I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily the place I’m willing to visit more than once, cuz one thing I didn’t like was the fact that there is no limit on how many tourists can be there at the same time. Especially during the peak season, when there are so many tourists at once that you don’t get to see much of it. I know big crowds are to be expected when we’re talking about such popular attractions, but I would’ve expected things to be slightly better organised. What I’m actually trying to say, is that when we got there by boat, there were at least 6-8 other boats full of tourists, plus dozens of paddles and kayaks, which were all waiting in line to get a bit closer to the cave. The issue is that every boat trip lasts for a specific time, which means they won’t wait forever to get closer. So you might not get the view you’re expecting. Nevertheless, it’s an interesting and exciting experience which you’ll be happy about at the end of the day.

How do you get to the Benagil Cave?

You can reach Benagil Cave by organised boat tours or even on your own, by stand-up paddles or kayaks. For the boat tours, the starting points are in Lagos, Portimao or Albufeira as well as local Benagil beaches . Lagos is a bit far from Benagil, which means the boat trip will take longer. Our accommodation was in Lagos, but we decided to start the tour from Portimao, so we took the train there. There is a short ride from Lagos to Portimao, and this way you get to see one of the largest towns on the coast as well.Β

I recommend you to take the boat tour, as you’ll also see many other wonderful caves during the trip. Be advised that the organised tours are extremely popular during summer and even in early September, so you might want to book the trip in advance. The only boats downside is that you can get inside the cave only if you go there by SUPs or kayaks. Β

Can you swim to the Benagil cave?

The currents in that area can be very strong, and even if the cave seems to be close to the Benagil main beach, it is not advised to swim around. If the boat tour is not what you’re looking for, then you can safely rent a SUP or a kayak.

How much does it cost to visit Benagil Cave?

There’s no entrance fee for the Benagil Cave. You will only pay the ride there, depending on what you choose. The organised tours prices start from 30€, and there are multiple companies to choose from.Β

Enjoy your trips! πŸ₯°
