Formentera – How to get there, Where to say and What to see

Formentera is the smallest of the Balearic Islands and one of the reasons that brought me to Ibiza. Covering an area of just over 80 km², it boasts one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe: Ses Illetes, which is the main attraction of the island. Formentera doesn’t have its own airport, but you can reach it in 30-40 minutes by ferry from Ibiza. It’s a true Mediterranean paradise, often compared to the Caribbean Islands in travel guides due to its stunning beaches and enchanting beauty, combined with a perfect holiday atmosphere.

Most tourists visit Formentera either on day trips from Ibiza or on their own. Given its small size, spending 1-2 days here is ideal to fully enjoy the beaches and landscapes Formentera has to offer.

1. How to Get to Formentera

As mentioned, Formentera doesn’t have an airport, so you can’t fly directly to the island. The most accessible option is to take a ferry from Ibiza. The departure point is Eivissa Port in Ibiza Town, and the final destination is the port of Formentera. A round trip ticket starts at €30, varying based on the time, season, or type of ferry (the fastest takes 30 minutes, while the slowest takes 1 hour). Several companies operate on the Ibiza-Formentera route, with Balearia offering the most daily trips, around 30. They also had the best prices at the time. Tickets can be purchased directly at the port or booked online here.

Upon arriving at the port of Formentera, you will need to take a bus to your desired location. We headed straight to Ses Illetes beach and took the yellow line bus. It’s a good idea to take a picture of the bus schedule to ensure you catch the return bus to Ibiza.

2. Transportation in Formentera

Local authorities in Formentera continuously invest in public transport to cater to tourists’ needs. Starting in June, there are two special tourist routes: the blue line and the yellow line, which depart from the port to the most popular destinations: Ses Illetes Beach and Es Pujols. These routes offer direct trips to the two beaches, but there are also other buses with stops across the island. Here are the routes for each line:

Besides the bus, another popular mode of transport in Formentera is renting bicycles or scooters from the port.

3. Accommodation in Formentera

Personally, I don’t recommend staying overnight in Formentera, as one day is sufficient to explore the island if you arrive in the morning and leave in the evening. However, if you wish to stay overnight, the best area for accommodation is Es Pujols, where you will find the most options, close to popular beaches and the port.
